Why are there 700ml and 750ml bottles for the same Whisky?

Both 700ml glass bottles and 750ml glass bottles are popular in the world. The only difference between them is that 700ml is the standard capacity stipulated by the European Union, while 750ml is the standard capacity stipulated by the United States.

Why are there two different sets of current laws? In fact, this is a problem left over from history. At first, there was no uniform capacity for whisky. Until the end of World War II, standardized and large-scale production gradually became the trend of whisky industry.

Why are there 700ml and 750ml bottles for the same Whisky?

As a result, many wineries simply introduced the standard wine capacity of 750ml, which is one fifth of the British 1 gallon. So many people will call a bottle of 750ml whisky “a fifth of whisky”. Subsequently, in 1970, the European Union officially set the standard capacity of a bottle of whisky as 750ml. Until 1979, the United States followed the steps of the European Union and revised the corresponding regulations. In other words, from 1979 to 1993, the standard volume of whisky in the world was 750ml. So, where does the current 700ml come from? In 1993, the EU “changed its mind”. They revised the regulations to reduce the standard capacity from 750ml to 700ml. As for the reason why the EU has done so, there is a common saying in the market: to raise prices. If the price is blatantly raised, it is easy to cause consumer dissatisfaction. Therefore, the EU has decided to adjust the standard capacity on the premise that the price remains unchanged.
